Karula Parish

Karula ( German: Karolen ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian Valga County with an area of 230 km ². It has 1025 inhabitants (1 January 2011).

In addition to the main town Lüllemäe the parish includes the villages Kaagjärve, Karula, Kirbu, Koobassaare, Käärikmäe, Londi, Funny Valentine, Pikkjärve, Pugritsa, Raavitsa, Rebasemõisa, Valtina and Väheru.

Especially the Karula National Park with unspoiled forests, moors and lakes is of interest to nature lovers.

Until 1919 the castle and the estate Karolen included (along with large land and forest ownership, bogs and lakes) of the German - Baltic family of Grote. Founded the Good in 1741. Heinrich von Grote was the last Heir to lock Karolen. After the revolutionary turmoil of 1917, goods and property of the family, which included additional items such as Grotenhof, Kawershof, Maggiore and Repsberg, expropriated by the Estonian state. Karolen Castle was burned down in 1919. In the same year Henry left of Grote and his family emigrated via the Baltic States and Finland to Germany. The German film director and writer Alexandra von Grote is a granddaughter of Henry Grote.
