Karymsky (volcano)

The volcano Karymsky (Russian Карымский, also Карымская сопка, Karymskaja Sopka ) is currently the most active volcano on Kamchatka. He is the center of a caldera of 5 kilometers in diameter. Since 1996, he spits resistant lava and ash. The outbreaks are observed since 1771, the radiocarbon dating shows that the activity lasts already for about 500 years. Previously, the volcano seems to have been 2300 years old and quiet. The Karymsky is surrounded by many other volcanoes, such as the Dsensurski or Koryaksky ( Korjakskaja Sopka ).

The ashes of the volcano is usually blown in 2000 to 3000 meters above sea level, but also 10,000 meters are possible, where they will be a hazard to air traffic. Name

The name of the volcano is derived from the ethnonym " Karym ", with the formerly mixed population of Russians and indigenous ethnic groups, mainly Buryats or Evenki was designated in Siberia east of Lake Baikal and the Far East of Russia.
