Kasungu-Nationalpark

The Kasungu National Park is 2300 km2, is the second largest national park in Malawi. It is 160 kilometers northeast of the capital Lilongwe located on the border with Zambia.

Landscape

The park is characterized by a varied landscape. Dominating is dense Miombo bush land, is characterized by solitary, prominent rocks, especially in the central part and an impressive range of hills in the north-eastern outskirts on the border with Zambia.

The park is crossed by several temporary rivers that almost completely dry up in the dry season and form the so-called dambos in their flood area; open grassland along the river courses. Centrally located is more than 1 kilometer long dam where there is the built in the 1970s, " Lifupa Lodge ".

Fauna

The animal population is composed of the most prevalent in southern Africa species, including elephants, buffalo, zebras and a wide variety of antelope. Of the large predators lions, hyenas and leopards are worth mentioning.

The park was once famous for its abundance of game, especially for the large buffalo and elephant herds. This picture has changed radically since the 1980s. Due to the ongoing poaching, the stocks have been decimated. Of the once up to 2000 elephants exist according to the latest estimates, only 100 to 150 rhinos and wild dogs are completely eradicated.

Nevertheless, the park continues to offer huge unspoilt wilderness areas and especially in the dry season along the dambos observed animals. Particularly from August to December, when the rivers dry out in the park, many wild animals especially elephants can be observed directly on the Dam.

The bird population is estimated at over 300 different species.

Tourism

The park offers some historical sights. Rock paintings and remains of iron-melting furnace in the north bear witness to the ancient habitation of the area.

Lifupa Lodge

Tourism in the Park is centrally located on the " Lifupa Lodge " from managed. The lodge is under new management since 2005 and has since been completely refurbished. It is completely grass covered and offers accommodation, bar and restaurant. There are both nights in comfortable 2 - and 3- bed chalets offered as well in rustic bush huts and safari tents. The latter are located on separate camp site that also offers a spacious lounge, a kitchen and sanitary facilities.

From the lodge safaris can be booked on foot or by car. As a special attraction -day licenses can be purchased for fishing in " Lifupa Dam".
