Katendrecht

Katendrecht is a peninsula in the district of Rotterdam Feyenoord. The district with about 4,000 inhabitants situated on a peninsula between the Maashaven in the south and Rijnhaven and Nieuwe Maas in the north, and is called by the locals De Kaap.

Originally coined rural, Katendrecht was a quiet village, in which a number of dignitaries had built their cottages, until it became a port area in 1895 and incorporated Rotterdam. The construction of several docks and in particular the completion of the Maas Havens in 1905 transformed the area into a typical sailor quarter around with a rich nightlife. The migration of the port of Rotterdam to the North Sea in the years since the Second World War and the introduction of the container industry, which reduced the turnaround times of vessels resulted in a social decay in the quarter. Although in recent years of the Rotterdam urban renewal in the neighboring Kop van Zuid with profiting, the district shall continue to apply with his still inadequate infrastructure and a very high proportion of foreigners as a social focal point. The city has therefore adopted an action plan, which is implemented since the beginning of 2007. The main action consists in a radical improvement of the infrastructure, including the construction of a new bridge (2010), were left with the plans for a cable car down again, the location of employers, the construction of more schools and day care centers, the construction of small shopping centers in the residential areas and a mixed design, the single-and multi -family homes, condominiums, and apartments of the free market and social housing combined. A total of 1,600 new homes are being built, 90,000 m² of commercial space and a new recreation area, where among other things the old passenger ship Rotterdam was opened on 15 February 2010, to be a tourist attraction now.
