Former Sanctuary

Catherine Berg is one of the rural community Südeichsfeld. It is situated in Unstrut Hainich in Thuringia and has about 150 inhabitants.

Geography

Mount St. Catherine is located at an altitude of 438 m; the municipal area is 158 hectares. The place is in Eichsfeld Hainich Werra Valley on the edge of the Eichsfeld.

History

The village was mentioned in 1512 as property of the Harstallschen family. In the Middle Ages the town had a military road with a customs station.

1462 pilgrimage chapel of the monastery was built in Anrode Mount St. Catherine, which was rebuilt 1520-1525 by Großburschla monastery Anrode and the pin for existing today as a ruin Sanctuary (see Catherine's Church Ruin mountain).

Due to the proximity to the border between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany was St. Catherine mountain up to the turn in a restricted area.

On 1 January 1957, the old church St. Catherine mountain was dissolved and incorporated into the parish Diedorf.

In 1984, the village green, the center of the resort, restored.

On 21 April 1995, the new church St. Catherine mountain was formed from the member municipalities of the administrative community Diedorf, Wendehausen, Diedorf, Faulungen and Schier Schwende.

With the dissolution of the municipality of Mount St. Catherine is the place came with the former districts Diedorf, Wendehausen, Faulungen and Schier Schwende on 1 December 2011 on the rural community Südeichsfeld. Last Mayor of Mount St. Catherine was Lothar Göbel ( CDU).
