Kaunos

Caunos was an ancient city in southeastern landscape Caria in Asia Minor, near the present town of Dalyan in Turkey. She was originally the sea, by shifting the coast now eight kilometers from the sea in the delta of Koycegiz River, connected to the Koycegiz Lake, however, is not completely silted up, but connected via the bottom waters and waterways with this. Caunos belonged temporarily to the Delian League and the mainland possession of the nearby island of Rhodes. The place was in ancient times as rich, but due to the situation in the marshy river delta in which pathogens can easily multiply as unhealthy. He was known for his widely exported dried figs. The Greek geographer Strabo wrote: .. "

There are still some remains of the ancient buildings to see, especially hewn into the rock Carian tombs, which date from the 4th century BC, but also a Roman theater, large baths, as well as a Nymphaeum, an agora, temples, a gymnasium, port facilities and an acropolis.

The area around Dalyan, Caunos, the rock tombs and the Koycegiz Delta is due to its location between the holiday resorts of Marmaris and Oludeniz today a much visited tourist attraction.
