Kavanagh building

The Kavanagh Building ( Edificio Kavanagh ) is a skyscraper in Buenos Aires. Its address is Calle Florida in 1065, on the east side of the Plaza General San Martín in the Retiro district.

The skyscraper was designed in 1934 by the architects Gregorio Sánchez, Ernesto Lagos and Luis María de la Torre, and was inaugurated in 1936. In 1939, the facade was honored by the American Institute of Architects. The building was added to the List of International Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks in 1994 by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1999 and placed on the list of National Historic Monuments of Argentina.

It was commissioned by Corina Kavanagh commissioned that invested her entire inheritance in the construction of the skyscraper. She herself lived a long time on the 14th floor in the largest apartment, which occupies an entire floor as a single. According to legend, the shape of the building is an act of revenge: Corina, who came from a wealthy but humble family, fell in love with the son of the noble family Anchorena. The Anchorena family who lived at the Palacio San Martín, was against the engagement. In return, Corina Kavanagh had built the skyscraper so that it blocks the view of the Church of the Anchorena family.
