Kayah (singer)

Kayah ( Katarzyna Rooijens, born Szczot; born November 5, 1967 in Białystok ) is a Polish singer.

Career

The mid-1980s Kayah collaborated with reggae bands Rastar and Zgoda, before she had her 1988 debut at the Karlshamn Baltic Festival with the song " Córeczko ". In the same year she released her debut album Kayah.

Then Kayah sang a long time as a background singer for other groups and in 1995 issued their first, self-produced solo album. On Kamien she presented melancholy pop songs. Kamien was an immediate success. In 1996 she was awarded the Polish Fryderyk music award in the category for Best Singer for her performance.

In 1997, she turned to with zebra stylistically American soul music. This is what, for example, the cover of The- Doors classic " Light My Fire".

In 1999, she created then together with the Yugoslav composer Goran Bregović an album that was one of the most successful Polish pop history. There have been sold to date more than 700,000 copies, which both artists brought the Diamond Record. In a complete departure from the last practice of soul music, this album was a combination of old Slavic folk songs and modern rhythms. Especially the song " Prawy do lewego " became synonymous. The video clip was played several times at the sender Onyx.tv.

Meanwhile, Kayah has molded his own style, which they repeatedly demonstrated a wide variation.

In 2001, she has recorded a single together with the Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora and performed with Udo Lindenberg on a duet. This makes their efforts significantly to repeat their success in Poland at international level.

To release their album JakaJaKayah and internationally, she invited several members of the BMG from different countries at a special concert in order to present them the album. But these were not taking in any country the risk to release the album. Later, the BMG Canada decided to release the album internationally. 2001 then the album came under the name YakaYaKayah with English songs and new cover on the market.

In 2003 he was Kayahs album stereotype. They separated completely from their soul -heavy style and took the songs in a modern guise of pop and dance, but also with the influence of R & B and club music. The repertoire was supplemented by slow ballads. Even though the album is kept very modern, you can still see the embossed by Kayah style. The singles " testosterone " and "Do DNA " were from the album coupled.

Since 2005, they have greater involvement for their record company Kayax and brought together with one of their artists, the single " Prócz ciebie, nic" out and at the same time also with DJ Smolik the single " Jutro rano ". In the same year, the best-of album, The Best & The Rest was released, at which there are both singles.

Her most recent solo studio album Skala appeared in 2009.
