The Arena Kazan (Russian Казань Арена ) is a football stadium in the north east of the Russian city of Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan. It offers visitors 45 105 seats. The arena replaced the Central Stadium in 1960 as the home of the football club Rubin Kazan.

History

On 5 May 2010 the then Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin laid the foundations for the modern stadium. The venue is modeled in form of a water lily. Following a vote on the Internet about the name of the modern arena, the proposal Kazan Arena prevailed with 45 percent of the 9477 votes. After delays and shifted opening on May 9 2013, the stadium was completed in time for the Summer Universiade in 2013 and inaugurated on June 14th of the year. Events

In the Kazan Arena the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2013 Summer Universiade was held. The football club Rubin Kazan will host its home games in the arena. In July 2011, Kazan was able to prevail against the Mexican Guadalajara and Hong Kong (China) to host the World Swimming Championships in 2015. The swimming competitions are held in Kazan Arena.
