Keg Johnson

Keg Johnson ( born November 19, 1908 as Frederic Homer Johnson in Dallas, Texas, † November 8, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American jazz trombonist.

Life

Johnson, brother of Budd Johnson, received instruction from Booker T. Washington's daughter and took 1927, the trombone playing on. First engagements he found in local bands before he participated in numerous orchestras and groups, among others, George E. Lee in 1929, Grant Moore 1930, Eddie Mallory 1931, Cassino Simpson 1932, Louis Armstrong 1933 and 1934 Fletcher Henderson and Benny Carter (1933 ). He held the first long job from at Cab Calloway, with whom he worked about 15 years ( 1934-1948 ). Around 1945 he worked with Ike Quebec, and in 1949 with Gene Ammons.

In 1950, after two years at Lucky Millinder, he went to Los Angeles, where he among other things, played with Wardell Gray. In 1960 he was involved in Budd Johnson's album " Let's Swing ", the same year of Gil Evans ' Out of the Cool. From 1961 until his death, Johnson played with Ray Charles.

Johnson was among the rounders on his instrument, his playing can be heard on publications of various groupings.
