Keiji Fukuda

Keiji Fukuda ( born 1955 ) is an American physician with the specialized field of influenza research. Fukuda resigned in March 2009, the job as Assistant Director - General for Health Security and Environment ad interim at the World Health Organization (WHO). On 1 September 2010 he took over the position permanently. Fukuda has worked for the WHO since 2005. He was from 2006 to 2008 Coordinator of the global influenza program. Later, he became director of this program. Before Fukuda began its work at WHO, he worked as Head of the Department empidemiologischen, area influenza at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Biography

The parents of Fukuda were physicians. His father emigrated from Japan and settled in Vermont. He came as part of a research fellowship for anesthesia in the United States and later worked in the hospital in Barre (Vermont ).

Keiji Fukuda studied at Oberlin College. He graduated with a BA. During his studies, he traveled for nine months backpacking through Asia, the Middle East and Europe. This was followed by a medical degree at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vermont. This he graduated in 1983 successfully. His specialist in internal medicine acquired Fukuda at the University of California, San Francisco. He also earned a Master of Public Health with a focus on epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley. After his residency training Fukuda worked in hospitals for leprosy and tuberculosis.

Fukuda was trained program at the CDC in Atlanta as part of the Epidemiology Intelligence Service ( EIS).
