Kelsang Gyatso

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso ( Wylie: rgya - mtsho bsKal - bzang ) ( born 1929 in Tibet) is a scholar of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, founder of the New Kadampa Tradition and author of 20 Buddhist books.

Life

Geshe Kelsang was born in 1929 in Tibet and ordained eight years as a Buddhist monk. His studies he graduated first in the monastery, Jampa Ling, later on Tashi Lhunpo monastery, where he passed two exams, and then to the great Sera Monastic University in Lhasa - ever.

When he left Tibet in 1959, he spent the next 18 years mainly with meditation retreats in the foothills of the Himalayas.

In 1973 he participated in the Sera Monastery, depending in part in a ceremony, which was presented to him a Khata in token of his recognition as Geshe in the frame. Since that time, he publicly called Geshe. In 1977 he took on the request of his spiritual teacher Trijang Rinpoche accepted an invitation to teach in Lama Thubten Yeshe FPMT center Manjushri Institute in Ulverston, England. In 1987 he went to the south of Scotland in a three - year retreat and during this time he wrote some books.

In 1991 he founded the New Kadampa Tradition. The New Kadampa Tradition sees itself as a continuation of the Buddhist Kadampa line as it comes from Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa. All Geshe Kelsang's 20 books are commentaries to Je Tsongkhapa's works.

On the basis of these texts, Geshe Kelsang designed the three study programs that are taught in all NKT centers.

He translated prayers, adapted the rituals of Western culture and founded Buddhist centers and groups around the world. By 2008 there were over 1100 in more than 50 countries.

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso was in 1982 a British citizen.
