Kemperi

Kemperi (Georgian ქემფერი; k ʰ ʰ ɛmp ɛrɪ ) is a Georgian village in the region of Inner Kartli, in the municipality Chaschuri. It lies on the eastern mountain slope of the Lichi - ridge, 11.5 km away from Chaschuri. The village has 470 inhabitants ( 2002)

History

In the historical documents of the Georgian city Kemperi was not mentioned until 1715. According to this document Kemperi is already a settlement with 11 families. The names of these families are mentioned. The village also exists with the name " Kemerti " on the map of the famous Georgian scientist and cartographer Wachuschti Batonischwili ( 1696-1757 ). In the 18th century, after the Lekianoba, the former village was destroyed and deserted.

In the 19th century Kemperi was settled again. In 1833, 14 families lived here, 68 men and 52 women. 1865 the village had 13 families and 1886 this number increased to 55 (293 inhabitants).

Attractions

St. George's Church

In the village Kemperi is the St. George's Church (Georgian ქემფერის წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია ), which was built in 1880. The church is a basilica and has a rectangular plan (7,7 x5, 2 meters) and is built from hewn square stone. The building has two entrance gates on the southern and western side. The interior is plastered white. The building is covered with tiles. Before this church was built, was an older and smaller St George's Church in their place.

" Zwerianas Saqdari "

About 400 meters south- east of the district of the village Narwani Kemperi is still a church named " Zwerianis Saqdari " ( German: a small church of Zweriani ). It dates from the late Middle Ages. The church is almost completely destroyed, there is only one part of the altar. The basilica was built from hewn stone. On the wall of the apse is a small window and two niches.
