Kenneth Grant

Kenneth Grant ( * May 23, 1924, † 15 January 2011) was a British occultist and head of OTO Typhonian, an OTO offshoot. He was a student of Aleister Crowley and Austin Osman Spare, and he worked with some famous magicians together, including Gerald Gardner and Gregory A. Gregory.

The Typhonian OTO and the New Isis Lodge

Kenneth Grant is one of the disciples of Aleister Crowley, who each take can claim to have been determined by Crowley to succeed him as head of the Ordo Templi Orientis. This claim has been challenged by Karl Germer, who also saw himself as head of OTO. After Grant tried to establish closer contacts with Gregor A. Gregorius and his box Fraternity of Saturn in Germany, announced Germer that Grant was no longer a member of the OTO.

Grant founded with some British occultists in April of 1955 the New Isis Lodge, which was magically active until 1962. The publication of the Manifesto of New Isis Lodge in the boxes publications of the Fraternity of Saturn was the real trigger for Karl Germer, Kenneth Grant excluded from the Order.

The magical work in the New Isis Lodge (Nu -Isis ) were aimed to explore the back of the kabbalistic tree of life, or in other words, it was trying to achieve through the deepest and darkest secrets of the sacred. Here rites were celebrated in all parts of the world, usually under guidance by insiders of these rites.

Grants large collection of magical objects, including some artifacts from the legacy of Crowley, played a role in some of the rituals. Even the stories of Howard Phillips Lovecraft has influenced the design and interpretation of these rituals. Likewise, there are clear echoes of Tantra, especially the Vama Marga and the Kaula Marga, in the work of the New Isis Lodge.

The New Isis Lodge was a special kind of " Forschungsloge " whose research was considered terminated after only seven years. In light of the results of this work Kenneth Grant founded the OTO Typhonian ( TOTO ), which clearly differs from the other orders, which are derived from Crowley's OTO. To know the TOTO no fixed degree system, as the basis of an initiation should not be an externally zelebrierter rite, but the progression of the Order can only be achieved by internally experienced self- initiations. Even the writings of Aleister Crowley is not given the high priority that this has had in other OTO, Thelema but is seen as a living flow, which evolved with the members. In the opinion of TOTO Thelema should be considered solved by the person Aleister Crowley, if anything of value is to come of it.

Not least of these views on the importance of Crowley and about the nature of initiations and degrees led to a bitter dispute between Kenneth Grant TOTO and incorporated in California Caliphaten OTO ( COTO ), which knew how to establish through the legal process as the official successor OTO.

Austin Osman Spare

Kenneth Grant was a friend of Austin Osman Spare, in his last years of life. He admired the art of spare and also its magical approaches and techniques. Without the journalistic ambitions Grants, the Save for a final, fragmentary and previously unpublished book persuaded the Grimoire of Zos, the name and the art of Austin Osman Spare, would probably be a lot less known than they are at least become occult Learner in circles.

The typhonic trilogies

Many of Grant's ideas and approaches can be easily misunderstood. These are eg the use of dark mythology of the American author HP Lovecraft in which Grant often cited the works of Michael Paul Bertiaux and its combination of voodoo and Lovecraft's mythology, or his interpretations of alleged UFO sightings. Likewise, the Liber Pennae Praenumbra, which he received from Maggie Ingalls ( Soror Nema ). In it the new aeon of Maat is announced and called IPSOS as a word for this aeon. This he let be used towards his book Outside the Circles of Time, as it is understood by him as " a key to transäonischen understanding of magic ." Accordingly, the aeons shall not extend in time or linear, but parallel to each other, they were to learn, depending on the state of consciousness. Also on Jack Parsons Liber Babalon, the alleged fourth chapter of Liber AL vel Legis, to Grant refers in some of his books, for example in The Magickal Revival or in Hecate's Fountain. Grants books are often ridiculed as the bizarre collection of stories makes it very hard to read between the lines. On the other hand, the books Kenneth Grant, the works for the advanced, which can be understood only through their own experience, however, remain closed beginners of magical practice. These books are challenging and require a lot from the reader, but they offer insight into the magic of the late twentieth century.

Some volumes of the three typhonic trilogies are no longer in print and are therefore only to get used, only The Magical Revival, Nightside of Eden, Cults of the Shadow, Aleister Crowley and the Hidden God, Outside the Circles of Time, and Hecate 's Fountain are titles revival of Magick, the Dark Side of Eden, Shadow cults, Aleister Crowley & the hidden God, Beyond the time circuits and Hecate's Fountain appeared on German. Outer Gateways was announced by the Red Dragon Edition for the summer under the title Beyond gates, other parts will follow. By Kenneth Grant's love of creating neologisms of his books are even people sometimes hard to understand who speak English as a native language.
