Kennett is a city of Dunklin County, Missouri in the United States with 11,260 inhabitants ( 2000). The city is the seat of this county.

History

In 1845, the place under the name of the county seat Chilletecaux Dunklin. The town's name came from an Indian chief of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware), the governor of the county of Daniel Dunklin. Because Chilletecaux was a relatively long and difficult pronounceable name, the city was soon after renamed Butler. However, this name led to confusion at the post office with the Butler County. 1851, the town was eventually named after the mayor of St. Louis, Luther Martin Kennett.

The city developed mainly as a trading center and with the production of cotton, soybeans and cattle. 1900 21,706 people lived here in 1950 there were already 45 329.
