Kepler Track

The Kepler track is a three - to four -day round trip in Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand, which is one of the Great Walks. The 60- kilometer trail leads past two of the largest lakes of the South Island, Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. He leads by southern beech forest and has an alpine section with an excellent view of Lake Te Anau and the Jackson Peaks. The highest point of the trail is Luxmore Saddle at an altitude of 1400 meters, the deepest is 180 meters on Lake Manapouri. As the Kepler Mountains, which are crossed, the track is named after Johannes Kepler.

The track is under the administration of the Department of Conservation (DOC). In contrast to many other tracks in New Zealand, which have their origin in ancient Māori paths, the Kepler Track was created in 1988 to relieve the much committed Milford Track and the Routeburn Track. The best season is from November to April.

Since 1988 there is a ultramarathon called Kepler Challenge on the track in December. The track record for these Trail Running since 2005, holds Phil Costley with a time of 4:37:41 h
