Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk

The 43 -kilometer-long Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk runs along the southern and western shores of Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera National Park in the North Island of New Zealand.

The officially classified as New Zealand Great Walk trail allowed during its course through different types of forests and open meadows often views of the lake. The path runs partly on private land and touches the Kiwi Sanctuary on the Puketukutuku Peninsula.

Starting points of the 3-4 day hike are Onepoto on the south and Hopuruahine at the north end of the lake.

Practical information

The nearest town is 60 km north- west of Wairoa. From there, if needed shuttle buses to the lake. Since this is not a race track, a transport by local bus or boat operator is required. All huts and campsites to the Panekiri hat on the Panekiri Bluff accessible by boat.

Both endpoints of the path lie on SH 38, the access to the lake with their own boats. Near the visitor center Aniwaniwa there are at Home Bay on the Whanganui o Parua a parking space for RVs.
