Kevin Barry (Boxer)

Kevin Michael Joseph Barry ( born October 10, 1959 in Christchurch ) is a former New Zealand boxer. Barry was oceanic champion of 1982 - 1985 and silver medalist of the Olympic Games 1984.

Career

In 1982, Barry oceanic champion in the light heavyweight ( 81kg - ) and won at the Commonwealth Games bronze medal. The following year he defended his title and oceanic Won the Commonwealth Championships. In 1984 he was the third time oceanic masterpiece.

The biggest sporting success achieved Barry at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He reached after victories over Don Smith, Trinidad and Tobago (5-0 ), Jonathan Kirisa, Uganda (3:2), and Jean -Paul Nanga, Cameroon (4:1), the semi-finals, where he later on the Heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield met. In the fight against clearly dominant Holyfield Kevin Barry KO went. After a controversial decision the Yugoslav ring judge who disqualified Holyfield because of take place after the pause character KO punch, Barry was awarded the silver medal. However, in the final Barry was not allowed to fight because of the damage KOs, so that the Yugoslav Anton Josipovic without a fight Olympic champion.

After the Olympics, Barry was again oceanic masterpiece and then turned professional business, but without achieving significant success. From 1985 to 1991 he played 20 fights of which he won ten, five by knockout, and 10 lost. He won the heavyweight title of "Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation " ( OPBF ), but lost it again as early as next fight. His two attempts to win the Australian heavyweight title were unsuccessful.

Kevin Barry remained connected even after end of his career in boxing. So he coached and managed the New Zealand - Samoan boxer David Tua and several other young boxers.
