Khalil Mardam Bey

Khalil Bey Mardam (* 1895 in Damascus, † 1959 in Damascus, Arab خليل مردم بك, DMG Halil Mardam Bak ) was a Syrian poet and critic who is best known as the lyricist of the Syrian national anthem Homat el Diyar.

Life

Khalil Mardam Bey was born to a prominent family in Damascus. He was one of the descendants of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Lala Kara Mustafa and General Pasha. As a poet, he was elected head of the company founded in 1926 Syrian Literature Association, which was annulled by the French. He studied English literature in London and taught Arabic literature at the National Science College in Syria. His most famous works included Al- Diwan ( الديوان ) and A'imat al -Adab ( أئمة الأدب ). He was also Syrian Foreign Minister from 1953 to 1954 and Chairman of the Arab Scientific Assembly from 1953 until his death in 1959.
