Khor Fakkan (Arabic خور فكان, DMG Haur Fakkān, even Churchill Fakkan, according to the UAE Embassy and both in German and in English literature usually Khor Fakkan ) is a city in the United Arab Emirates. It lies on the Gulf of Oman, surrounded by the emirate of Fujairah, but part of an exclave of the emirate of Sharjah. The city has a deep sea port with a container terminal.

History

1580 mentioned the jeweler Gasparo Balbi Venetian " Chorf " in a list of places on the east coast of the present-day United Arab Emirates, which is regarded by historians as the Khor Fakkan today.

The Portuguese built a fort there, although it was not looped 1666. In the log book of the Dutch ship Meerkat this fort and another under the name Gorfacan is mentioned in connection with a settlement consisting of 200 small wooden huts. The settlement was surrounded by date palms and fig trees, in the village there were wells that were used for irrigation.

Khor Fakkan in 1737 was conquered by the Persians, and from 1765 the town belonged to the ruling in the Emirate of Sharjah Sheikh family. From 1903 to 1952 Khor Fakkan was part of the split-off from Sharjah emirate Kalba.

During the Second World War, the German submarine U 533 was sunk off the coast. The wreck is located 40 km away from Khor Fakkan away. From 1965 to 1969, the enclave formed an independent postal territory and gave out stamps bearing the inscription Sharjah & Dependencies / Khor Fakkan.

Today's meaning

The city refers the current significance mainly due to the important seaport, also by the tourism industry. Outside the harbor there are attractive beaches and coral reefs, may be where submerged.
