Kilingi-Nõmme

Kilingi - Nõmme is a city in southwestern Estonia. It is located 40 km southeast of the town of Pärnu and Pärnu belongs to the circle. The population is 2,447 (as of 1 January 2000). Since 2005, the city belongs to the municipality Saarde.

History

The first mention of the settlement dates back to 1560. Later The place got its name after the landlord Valentin Shilling ( in Saarde dialect Kilingi ) and the guest house Nõmme.

End of the 19th century had Kilingi - Nõmme 500 inhabitants. In 1928 the population was 1420. In 1938 Kilingi - Nõmme received its town charter.

Since 1998 Kilingi - Nõmme is a member of the international project European Cultural Villages.

Economy and infrastructure

There is almost no industry directly in the city. Kilingi - Nõmme is however surrounded by 35562 hectares of forest. Many companies are here in the wood processing works - Talme AS, AS Sylvester, Metsakuivendus OÜ, AS Puitex.
