Kilkenny (beer)

Kilkenny is an Irish beer. Originally it denoted a stronger, produced for export variant of red ales sold in Ireland Smithwick's. Meanwhile, both brands are parallel to one another to buy in Ireland. In direct comparison Kilkenny has the higher alcohol content and tastes bitter. It also has a more reminiscent of Guinness foam crown.

Kilkenny was - as Smithwick's - originally only brewed in St. Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny City. The brewery continues the brewing tradition begun in the 14th century the former monastery. Today, however, there is yet another brewery in the town of Dundalk. Both brands are part of the Diageo Group, amongst other things, the Guinness brand. Part of the export production of Kilkenny is therefore brewed in the Guinness headquarters at St. James 's Gate in Dublin.

Kilkenny is a Red Ale, which is milder than the darker Guinness Stout. Its color is brown with a slight shade of red. In Ireland, it is also sold as canned beer, which with the addition of a " floating widget" - originally developed to give Guinness from cans while pouring the typical froth - tastes almost like from the tap and looks. Smithwick's cans have this widget no longer now.

Naming

How do the different for export name comes is unclear. The name Smithwick's reads in some language areas so that he anmutet obscene. This fact should have led to loss of sales in the exporting countries, which is why the Guinness Brewery ordered a name change on the acquisition of E. Smithwick's and Sons. Thus, Smithwick's was henceforth designated for export to the county in which it was originally brewed.
