Kingdom of Desmond

Desmond ( Irish: Deas - mhumhain what SüdMunster means ) was a historic kingdom and historic county in the south-west coast of Ireland. It included the counties Cork and Kerry in 1606 and divided into these.

Just as Desmond comes from the Gaelic " Deas - mhumhain " and South Munster means there are more field names: - Thomond " Tuath - mhumhain " ( North Munster), Ormond " Ur - mhumhain " (East Munster) and Iarmond " Iar - mhumhain " (West Munster). After the 14th century, the term was used Desmond to the dominion of the Irish Gaelic MacCarthy Mor clan, as well as to refer to the dominion of the " Earl of Desmond ".

After the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 the title " Earl of Desmond " was awarded in 1329 to Maurice FitzGerald. The Fitzgeralds were popularly very popular and they were accused of, they would have become more Irish than the Irish. Their opposition to the English influence resulted in the Desmond Rebellions of 1569-1573 and 1579-1583.
