Kitty Hawk is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, which was known by the first powered flights by the Wright brothers in the world.

Geography

Kitty Hawk is a coastal town in Bodie Iceland on the Outer Banks, a 160 km long, the North Carolina Coast upstream nehrungsartigen island strip that separates the Albemarle Sound from the Atlantic here.

History

The town was founded in the early 18th century under the name Chickahawk.

The Wright Brothers chose the place Kitty Hawk because of the strong and steady winds to him to use as a starting place for their experiments with gliders in the years 1901 until 1903. On December 14, 1903 they succeeded in the first hop to the of them newly developed Wright Flyer.

December 17, 1903, finally they reach 4 flights with height gain by engine power; therefore this day than that of the first motorized flight in the world went down in history. At the edge of the former airfield, a monument was erected; many panels on the airfield remember the pioneers.

In memory of these events from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV -63 ), were the aircraft transport ship USS Kitty Hawk ( AKV -1) and the command module of Apollo 14 named after the place.
