Kizimkazi Mosque

The Kizimkazi Mosque lies at the southern end of the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania and one of the oldest Islamic building on the East African coast. Contrary to the name it is in Dimbani not Kizimkazi that is three kilometers away. The reason for this naming lies in the fact that the official name of the two connected places Kizimkazi Dimbani and Kizimkazi Mtendeni is.

According to a Kufi inscription preserved it was built in 1107 by settlers from Shiraz (Iran). Although the inscription and some decorative elements of coral from the time of its construction date, the main part of the present structure was built in the 18th century.
