Kleine Pyra

Small Pyra amounting Hunter Green

The little pyramid is a right tributary of the river Mulde in Saxony.

Course

The Small Pyra arises in the field of town Muehlleithen near the main ridge of the Western Ore Mountains. Follows the run almost the entire length of B283. After leaving Mühlleiten the Pyra first passes through the forest area of the Erzgebirge / Vogtland, before it enters the municipality of Tannenbergsthal. It streams flow from the side valleys of the mountain of God, and a little further north of Schneckenstein.

In the course of the river the work site of the former artificial leather factory passed east and flows now straightened through the center of Tannenbergsthal. At the level of the former school, the Pyra is jammed at a weir and a portion of the water is drained into a mill race, which, initially parallel to the Pyra running, gains altitude over the river and pours one kilometer over a small waterfall in the animal pond. The pond is also fed by the Thierenbach, which arises from a radium source below the animal mountain. The water of the pond is used at the nearby sawmill for generating electricity. The Pyra passes through the animal and pond flows after about a kilometer in height of the district Hunter Green in the river Mulde.

Environment

Water quality

By the year 1989, the water quality of the river was considerably affected by the effluents of VEB Vogtländische synthetic leather factory. Since the closure of the establishment, the river has recovered, so now brook trout and other fish have returned.

More

The river was straightened in the thirties of the 20th century and lost between Tannenbergsthal and the village of Hunter Green its meanders.
