Kleine Schmalenau

The Small Schmalenau is a 10.6 km long tributary of the members of the Möhnetalsperre Hevesees and thus orographic left tributary of the Heve in North Rhine -Westphalia, Germany.

Geography

The Small Schmalenau rises in the Arnsberg Forest in the saddle between Damberg and Haskers Brücher. The source is located about 750 meters north of Dinschede near the Plackweges at an altitude of 389 m above sea level. NN. From here the river flows first in a northerly direction. After about half way turns the drive to the northwest. After 10.6 km flow distance the little Schmalenau empties into the Hevesee, a Vorstau the Möhnetalsperre. The height position of the mouth is now at 213 m above sea level. NN.

With a height difference of 176 m, the average bed slope is 16.6 ‰. The 17.909 km ² large catchment area is drained by Heve, Möhne, Ruhr and Rhine to the North Sea.

Tributaries

The Small Schmalenau takes on numerous shorter tributaries. The most important tributary is the Hevensbrink 6.4 km in length. The following are the tributaries of the Little Schmalenau are listed as they are out in the water directory NRW.

Nature and Environment

The Small Schmalenau located throughout its course in the nature reserve Breitenbruch -Neuhaus. For this region, are currently running efforts to deport a national park Arnsberg Forest. It is already part of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Am Bach incubates the kingfisher and the brooding in the neighboring woods Black Stork is a frequent guest food. A botanical feature is an extensive occurrence of Straußenfarns ( Matteuccia struthiopteris ) in the lower reaches of the Little Schmalenau. The little Schmalenau is part of a currently ongoing LIFE project of the European Union stream valleys in the Arnsberg Forest. In this project, spruce stands by the brook are further transformed into natural forests former stream channelization and bank reinforcements away.
