Knock Castle, Largs

Knock Castle is a manor house near the Scottish town of Largs in North Ayrshire Unitary Authority. In 1971 the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A monument.

History

The construction of the manor house was begun in 1851 and completed the following year. For the design of the Glasgow architect John Thomas Rochead responsible. The client was the businessman Robert Steele from Greenock. An extension to the east was in 1908. Purpose, the architectural firm Fryers & Penman delivered a design that forms a stylistic unity with the original building.

Description

The Tudor Gothic mansion is isolated away from the A78, close to the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde between Largs and Skelmorlie. The facades of the two-story building are clad in polished, yellow freestone. The entrance is located on the north side in a three-story tower with a square base. He's worked with a Tudor arch. It comes out a shallow bay. Analogous to other parts of the building windows are installed as a twin or triple window with stone mullions. String courses mark the floor demarcation. In addition to the tower rises on another tower with an octagonal floor plan. The building ends with a crenellated reinforcement, which covers the roofs.
