Uganda Kob

The Kob (Kobus kob ) is an antelope of the genus waterbuck. It resembles the Puku, which is why they sometimes to the same species as this is expected in size and appearance. The name " Kob " was borrowed from the Wolof language. The Kob is one of the most common species of gazelle in Africa and one of the subtypes shows distinct migration behavior.

Features

The burly male can weigh in with a shoulder height of up to 109 centimeters and 95 kilograms. It has a muscular neck and strong, lyre- shaped horns which can grow up to 69 centimeters long. The female carries no horns and is lighter than the colored males typically. Due to the coloring you can distinguish between different subspecies. Most of the Kob are colored reddish brown, wearing a white spot on the neck and black markings on the front of legs. At the bottom they are white.

Distribution area

The Kob is only found in West and Central Africa, from Senegal about Nigeria and southern Sudan to the west of Uganda.

Kobs live in flood plains and hilly terrain and are bound by time waters. Here they live on grass and aquatic plants.

The females form herds of 15 to 40 animals. Males are territorial loners. As with the related Lechwe the areas with dense populations are very small; they sometimes have a diameter of only 100 meters, and a male can this small territory often to keep only a few days.

Although some experts have described up to thirteen different sub-species are usually distinguished only three, because there are very noticeable differences between them:

  • Buffon kob ( K. k kob ), West Africa from Senegal to Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic.
  • White ear - Kob ( K. k leucotis ), Southern Sudan, north-western Uganda. In this subspecies, the males have an almost black brown back, inside of the ear is remarkably bright and the white circles sit down strong against the rest of the coat from. Important protected areas are about the Boma National Park and the Badingilo National Park in southern Sudan.
  • Uganda kob ( K. k thomasi ), northern Congo, southwestern Uganda
