Kobe University
The University of Kobe (Jap.神 戸 大学, Kobe daigaku in Kansai as Shindai (神 大) is known ) is a Japanese national university in Kobe.
It was founded in 1949 and today consists of nine graduate schools and eleven faculties. 15,000 students are enrolled in total. As a cosmopolitan city of Kobe also attracts some foreign students (2005: 963). 2,800 professors, assistants and administrative staff working at the university.

History
The roots of the University up to the year 1902, when the Higher Commercial School Kobe (神 戸 高等 商业 学校, Kobe Kōtō shōgyō Gakko ) was founded. Its first president was Tetsuya Mizushima (水 岛 銕 也, 1864-1928 ). 1929, the school in Handelsunversität Kobe (神 戸 商业 大学, Kobe shōgyō daigaku ) was renamed, and 1944 then University of Economics, Kobe (神 戸 経 済 大学, Kobe keizai daigaku ).
With the new Japanese education system, the University in 1949 was with the normal school Hyōgo (兵 库 师范学校, Hyōgo shihan Gakko ), Youth Normal School Hyogo (兵 库 青年 师范学校, Hyōgo his shihan Gakko ), technical Kobe (神 戸 工业 専 门 学校, Kobe Kōgyō Semmon Gakko ) and high school Himeji (姫 路 高等学校, Himeji Kōtō Gakko ) merged to university Kobe. These schools were all located in Hyōgo Prefecture.
In 1964, the former Medical University of Kobe was (兵 库 県 立 神 戸 医科大学, Hyōgo kenritsu Kobe ika daigaku ) to medical school. In 1966, the former Agricultural University was Hyōgo (兵 库 県 立 兵 库 农科 大学, Hyōgo kenritsu Hyōgo Noka daigaku ) for agricultural faculty. 2003, the former Maritime Academy was Kobe (神 戸 商船 大学, Kobe Shosen daigaku ) to the Faculty of Marine Sciences.
