Kočani Orkestar

Kocani Orkestar The Original ( TOCO ) is a 7 -member Balkan Brass Orchestra of the Turkish-speaking Roma community in Kocani, Macedonia. Since its soundtrack of Emir Kusturica for feature film "Time of the Gypsies" were known throughout Europe and often tours in Central Europe and from Italy to Finland.

Music and lyrics

The style of this Roma brass band is called in its own region as " Romska Orientalna Musika ". It is a very fast played, danceable mix of Balkan Brass sounds and Turkish- Bulgarian rhythms. The unusual for Central Europeans odd time signatures, such as 11/8-Takte, are hardly nachspielbar no longer exercise.

In contrast to the well-known in Germany Romanian " Fanfare Ciocărlia " elements of South American popular music ( mambo, samba ) and popular music Indian, Turkish and Chinese origin, in addition to regional folklore sounds from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey sometimes integrated.

Vocals are used sparingly on foreign concert tours, as the lack of translation texts remain inaccessible. There usually are very traditionally oriented small stories about love, jealousy, grief experiences and humor.

Band History

From grandfather the tape head Naat Veliov from childhood learned to a varied repertoire, the members of the lineup are mostly relatives and neighbors. Due to the musical accompaniment of weddings, funerals and birthdays, the musicians grew into the tradition and put them away.

The international breakthrough they found in 1989 after the worldwide success of the movie "Time of the Gypsies", on the soundtrack Naat Veliov and his Orkestar was much involved.

In 1999, the former group, Naat Veliov be split had to re- occupy two positions in his combo and changed the name to " Original Kocani Orkestar ." The group led by two former members continue to use the old name " Kocani Orkestar ".

In the center of the combo is the virtuoso trumpeter was born in 1957 Naat Veliov, with his son Orhan, saxophonist Elsan and the tubaist Dalkran on stage constantly delivers musical dialogues. His father Hikmet plays tuba and is also a regular member of the ensemble. The percussionist on the Turkish- Balkan darbouka, Ali Memedivski by marriage with the family. Drummer Redzaim Juseinov plays the basic rhythm with a worn front of the abdomen bass drum while the right hand side the muffled tones left hand strikes the main rhythm.
