Köchel catalogue

The Köchelverzeichnis is a catalog raisonné of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It first appeared in 1862 under the title Chronological and thematic directory of all the Tonwerke Wolfgang Amade Mozart 's. In addition to specifying the lost, or part thereof, transferred, dubious and pushed compositions thereof.

History

Ludwig von Kochel, after which it is named, created this directory. He collected many facts about Mozart and his works numbered in chronological order. The first edition of the directory was published in 1862, since then it has been brought by renowned musicologists to the latest state of research. The currently available 8th edition of Köchelverzeichnis is the second reprint of the 6th edition of 1964.

The abbreviation for Köchelverzeichnis is KV (or K in English ). For example, the famous Little Night Music has the designation KV 525 Total contains the Köchelverzeichnis 626 numbered works by Mozart; added a number of amendments.

From the 3rd edition (1937, Alfred Einstein) the numbers of several works have been changed; the new numbers were arranged in chronological order and often contain an additional lowercase letters ( eg " Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola in E flat major ," originally KV 364 - KV 320d now ). Especially many changes brought the 6th edition (1964, by Franz Giegling, Gerd Sievers, and Alexander Weinmann ). With these changes, new information about the chronology of the development work and the relationship of individual plants were considered. Outside of science, these changes had not enforced. Music publishers, concert promoters, authors of popular books and the music industry still use Kochel's original numbering. Often both enumerations are specified, as in the form KV 110 ( KV6 75b).

Commissioned in 1993, the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel a team of experts under the leadership of the American musicologist Neal Zaslaw with the development of a new edition of the Kochel directory. The work is completed in manuscript and will be published in German language in book form, but not before 2013.
