Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre ( KAIPTC ) is located in Accra, Ghana and named after the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan device for training of armed forces for international peace operations and further development of international peace operations of West African troops. Commander of KAPTC is Major General ( Major-General ) John Attipoe. In KAIPTC civilian, police and military forces are trained for use as part of international peacekeeping missions.

Foundation

KAIPTC was on a training base of the Ghanaian military ( Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Teshie ) with international support as a multinational center for the creation and support of West African missions in the framework of international peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) was founded. With the KAIPTC the increasing importance of African countries should be assisted in international peacekeeping.

Since the early 60s, Ghanaian military take part in UN peacekeeping missions. The large experience in this field to be processed and passed on through the KAIPTC. In May 1998, the Ministry of Defence of Ghana approved the establishment of the KAIPTC in Accra for the training and for the training of West African troops for the work in peacekeeping missions of the UN. KAIPTC was planned and founded as a training base for at least the entire West African region of the continent.

The opening ceremony took place on 24 January 2004 in the presence of high international and national politicians instead of the then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, the Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor, the Ghanaian Defense Minister Kwame Addo Kufuor, and the ECOWAS Executive Secretary Ibn Chambas.

Support

KAIPTC is supported internationally financially and by providing experienced teaching staff. The Federal Republic of Germany has promoted the KAIPTC since the creation of 6 million euros. Due to the large German support, the auditorium was named on the KAIPTC grounds after the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder Hall. Between 2004 and 2008 an additional 3.5 million euros will be provided for the KAIPTC available. Essential for the development of KAIPTC were the supports from Canada, Denmark, European Union, France, India, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Equipment and seminars

The first course was successfully held in November of 2003. On the grounds are currently two working spaces for about 30 seminar participants, four seminar rooms for approximately 25 participants and three meeting rooms with the latest technology available. Furthermore, an auditorium with 203 seats, is also open to larger events. The CAST ( Command and Staff Trainer Room) more than 40 participants are selected on the basis of modern simulators for conducting operations in crisis areas.

In courses and seminars will be presented to the participants from the various military units interdisciplinary Use in crisis areas. In addition to military capabilities workouts in security, diplomacy and administration tasks are taught. Place particular emphasis on the trainers internationally designed task forces and the particular problems when used in the most diverse areas in crisis politically, culturally and economically weak regions. Also used as an election observer, the subjects are trained.

KAIPTC specializes in the education and training of leaders in international peacekeeping missions. Already 43 courses (as of 7 February 2007) have been carried out successfully. Only in February 2007, five additional courses on the implementation and 17 other courses up to the end of November 2007. Than 3000 participants from 70 countries have already participated in the seminars.

The Ghanaian guided KAIPTC is supported by an international staff .. The command of the training facility KAIPTC Air Vice Marshal Chris has EK Dovlo. To carry out the daily work the commander an international team of Nigeria, mail, Ghana, the United States, Switzerland and Germany is set to the side.

Within the KAIPTC are three departments, also to be distinguished with an international cast, :

  • Training Department with course directors and a training evaluation & - Development Unit
  • Development Department with program managers
  • Administration for the vital support of daily operations.
