Kohama Island
Kohama -jima (Japanese小 浜 岛; Yaeyama: Kumo / okinawisch: Kubama ) is an island in the municipality of Taketomi, Okinawa. Kohama belongs to the Yaeyama Islands, has an area of 7.84 km ² and has 573 inhabitants in 328 households.
On the island, which is several times a day to reach the island by ferry from Ishigaki, Kohama will find the village of the municipality of Taketomi.
Attractions
On Kohama -jima the exterior shots of Khurasan, a 2001 Japan very successful TV series were filmed. Therefore, the island is visited by relatively many Japanese tourists. One of the main attractions is the built in traditional Ryukyu Islands style house Kohagurasō (こはぐら 荘), where the main plot played. The house is surrounded by a wall of coral rock, and, as previously the case, in addition hidden from view of passers- by a wall between farm gate and house. This wall is to protect against evil spirits. Typically also the hipped roof of red brick with a figure of the mythical beast Shisa, which will also protect the house and its inhabitants. Another major attraction of the island is a road east of the village, also developed at the numerous exterior shots in the series. Because it leads past fields of sugar cane, it is known in Japan under the name Sugar Road ( Sugar Street ).
The highest point of the island is 99 m high mountain Ufudaki, on top of which is a staircase. Here's a pavillion was built, from which provides a comprehensive view over the whole island to the neighboring island of Iriomote.
In the village the local museum is also worth seeing, which among other agricultural implements and historical photos can be seen. Rises on the beach on the east coast Kohama - Jima, a white gate that has the entrance to a Shinto shrine. Infrastructure
The only village on Kohama -jima has a modern school, an administration building, a few small shops and guesthouses and restaurants. Just outside the village a large hotel complex was built.
