The Köhlbrand is a tributary of the Southern Elbe in the North Elbe between the former Werder Elbinseln mill and Rugenbergen westlicherseits and Kuhwerder, Ross and Neuhof östlicherseits. He is the main access to the Harburg ports and Container Terminal Werder.

The Köhlbrand is a part of the Federal Elbe waterway and belongs to the so-called delegation distance, that is, management and maintenance are performed by the agents of the Federation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

History

The Köhlbrand originated during the 14th and 15th century, when after severe storm surges the Elbinsel Gorieswerder was separated into several islands. On its shores charcoal was burned, which was sold by resident charcoal burners to the Schiffer ( hence the name Köhlbrand ).

After the 3rd Köhlbrandvertrag between Prussia and Hamburg from 1908 Elbarm was straightened, moved west from the present coal shipping port to 600 meters, then deepened to 8.4 meters and the main drain of the Southern Elbe. Since then, he is an average of about 300 meters wide fairway. The headland Köhlbrandhöft in 1961, built sewage treatment plant separates the old from the new passage.

On the sandy western shore of Köhlbrands was until the 1930s a river Bathhouse, which was primarily set up for children and young people from poorer classes.

With the expansion of the port to areas west of the Köhlbrands the necessary link between the port districts Waltershof and Neuhof in 1912 was accomplished by two Trajektfähren. These were to Eisenbahntrajekte with vehicle transport, Trajektfähre I and II Trajektfähre, built at the shipyard in Szczecin. These were 1956 and 1960 supplemented by two car ferries that JF Bubendey and G. L. Wendemuth. From 1960, with the decline of the port rail transport in favor of truck traffic that Trajekte came only in exceptions for use, 1972, they were all set. In 1974, the transport important link between Steinwerder and Waltershof was taken over by the Köhlbrandbrücke. It spans with a clearance of 53 meters above the estuary and also allows large ships to pass through. The car ferries were adjusted for pedestrians and cyclists to translate with the line 61 of the harbor ferries is possible since then. Rail traffic is routed via the Kattwyk bridge since 1973.
