Koichi Tohei

Tohei Koichi (Japanese藤 平光 一, born January 20, 1920 in Tokyo, † 19 May 2011) was a Japanese aikido teacher and one of the few carriers of a 10th Dan.

Life

As a child, Tohei was rather weak, so that his father led him to Judo and Zen in order to strengthen his body.

In 1939 he met Ueshiba Morihei and began Aikido. He was one of his favorite pupil and in 1956 Head Coach ( shihan Bucho ) at the Aikikai Honbu Dojo. Through his trips to Hawaii (from 1953) and later to North America and Europe, he was instrumental in the spread of Aikido in the West. From 1969 he was founder awarded 10th dan.

He disagreed with Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the son and successor of the founder of Aikido, he founded in 1971 the association of their own Ki no Kenkyūkai, however, remained for the time being at the Aikikai. In 1974 it came to the final break. The He founded the style of Aikido is known as Shin- Shin- Toitsu Aikido - "Aikido in unity of body and spirit"; often it is also known as Ki- Aikido. In addition to martial arts he taught the Shin acquired by Tempu Nakamura Shin Toitsu Dō ( Ki- training) and one to the Shiatsu ajar therapy, Kiatsu, where you can Ki flow into stiff muscles so they relax.

Koichi Tohei died on 19 May 2011 at the age of 91 years of pneumonia, after a two-week hospital stay.
