Koldewey Island

The Koldewey Island (Russian остров Кольдевея, Ostrow Koldeweja ) is an island in the south of belonging to Russia Franz -Josef- Lands in the Arctic Ocean. The island is named after the German polar explorer Carl Koldewey.

Geography

The island belongs to the southeastern group of the archipelago and is for glacial - morphological conditions rather flat (highest point at 66 meters, temporarily named as Mountain Carl-Christian ). A landing by boat is possible at various points. In addition to the survey on the plateau there is a doppelgipfelige, 6 meter high spire. A second, smaller plateau fragment was temporarily named Robert Berg, after the nephew of Carl Koldewey. The island has no lakes. By the only valley a small stream flows in summer.

On the island governed by the same temperatures and there is the same flora and fauna as on the large neighboring island of Salm. The Koldewey Island glacier is completely free. Since 15 June 2009, it belongs to the entire archipelago Franz Josef Land to the Russian National Park "Russian Arctic " ( " Русская Арктика "). The strait between the two islands is about 200 meters deep. The island extends in two directions, in the north of the relief is dynamic with an elongated, steep -edged cape with a tiny island Schönau at the top, in the south west it connects very flat with a long gravel foreland by a more than 6 km underwater soil, which does not deeper than 35 m, with the glaciated side of Salm island. The mean elevation of the large bank (temporarily blocking stone Siegfried Elof called ) reaches only five feet below the water surface and is located 12 km east opposite the famous Cape Tegetthoff on Hall Island in the Lavrov - road.
