The Kollbach is a right tributary of the Vils in Lower Bavaria. The source is located 400 meters south of the hamlet of pigeons village in the municipality Gangkofen at an altitude of 459 meters. The river flows between Rott and Vils in a northeasterly direction. After 32 km, it flows 500 meters northeast of the hamlet of houses Bruck (municipality Rossbach ) at an altitude of 339 meters in the Altvils. The catchment area is 275 km ².

Geography

The Kollbach is the largest river in the lower Bavarian hill country with natural and unspoilt shores without straightening and flood protection, and the shores are inhabited by beavers. The river meanders over long distances, and at its flatter left side of the river floods are frequent. Therefore, these areas are used despite good soil not for farming, but as grassland. The right bank is characterized by steep, wooded slopes, similar to the case of the Isar. The cause of the asymmetric valley shape the glacial solifluction is suspected.

Etymology

The unusual female gender for a river whose name ends with Bach is explained with the probable origin of the name of the Celtic language: chail pacha = black water.

Towns

After Kollbach a village in the market Gangkofen is ( an independent municipality until 1972, since then a district of the market Gangkofen ) named and a hamlet in the parish Malgersdorf.
