Komla Agbeli Gbedemah

Komla Agbeli Gbedemah (* June 17, 1912; † September 8, 1998 ) was a leading politician in Ghana. He has held several ministerial posts and was the founder of the party National Alliance of Liberals.

Career

Gbedemah was a former minister ( Minister of Finance and Minister of Health ) in the government of the Convention People's Party under the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. He is also considered one of the leaders who have contributed to the creation of independent Ghana. After the military coup of the governance of the military junta National Liberation Councils led Gbedemah founded the party National Alliance of Liberals (NAL ), which focused on the representation of the interests of the people of the Ewe. Gbedemah was dismissed shortly after the elections of 29 August 1969 the Supreme Court of his won in these elections seats, which due to the conviction for serious financial crimes.

Others

Among other things, the New York Times reported on October 9, 1957 by a political scandal that went through the press and worldwide. Gbedemah, in his capacity as a Ghanaian Finance Minister on an official trip to the United States when he is going to stay in a restaurant in Dover, Delaware. In the restaurant it but the service was denied because of his black skin color. It should have come at a political excuse. This incident is said to have led to an invitation to breakfast with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. At this meeting, the cause of the stay Gbedemah 's came up. This informed the President that he had been commissioned by President Nkrumah with the planning and organization of the financing of the proposed Volta Reservoir. The then U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon was asked by Eisenhower to support the financial planning. Ultimately, the World Bank has entered to finance the project.
