Komokiacea

The Komokiacea are a superfamily of single-celled, meeresbewohnender foraminifera from the order of Astrorhizida. It is mainly found in the deep sea world.

Description

Komokiacea have diameters up to 1-5 millimeters. Her delicate and not very robust housing are often branched tubular, the branches are usually dichotomous, rarely find trichotomies or even polytomies. The housing walls are simple and are agglutinated from bound in organic glue clay particles, the case interior is lined with a thin organic layer. in case there are agglomerations of small faecal pellets ( Stercomata ). Apertures are formed as discharge openings for Retikulopodien are simple pores in the housing.

Dissemination

Types of Komokiacea are found in all oceans and are also detected arctic. Vertical they are occupied at depths 400-9600 m, with a clear focus beneath the continental slopes in the Abyssal and Hadal the deep sea, finds from higher altitudes are much rarer. Representatives of Baculellidae not rise to heights above 2000 meters.

Systematics and history of research

The superfamily was first described in 1977 by Ole S. tendal and Robert R. Hessler, at the same time with two families, six genera and eleven species. From the late 1980s then many new taxa have been described. Type genus is Komokia, the name derives from the term komoki, a playful parody of the Russian " vetvistye komoktchki " ( " branched clumps " ), one at the time in the Soviet Union common informal term for the animals.

While tendal Hessler and they still einordneten at the Textulariida, they are currently conducted at the Astrorhizida. Komokiacea are occupied only from the Holocene.
