Kompakt

Compact is an internationally successful record label for electronic music in Cologne.

To label also includes a record store in the Werderstraße in Cologne, a sales agency and an artist.

History

Compact goes back to a record store, which was established on 1 March 1993 ( under the name of Delirium ) by Wolfgang Voigt and his brother Reinhard Voigt, Jörg Burger and Jürgen Paape. In early 1998, this changed to compact and founded the eponymous label as a summary of various existing smaller labels ( Profane, Studio 1).

Owners today are Wolfgang Voigt, Jürgen Paape and Michael Mayer.

Style

Compact has been and is internationally associated with a particular brand of minimal techno, the designated lot of media as Sound of Cologne. Although now quite diverse styles of electronic music appear on Kompakt - from abstract- experimental tracks, to vocal pieces with pop elements ( Justus Köhncke ) - is compact understood still as techno label (Wolfgang Voigt in an interview in 2003: 51% to compact must be techno. Otherwise, anything goes. ).

The claim of the label is to make innovative and polarizing music and still have economic success; especially for plates in which it comes to be right, not for sale, as Voigt once said. Despite experimentation and emphasis is placed on functional dance music and DJs as a buyer target group, which was funded by the weekly party series Total Confusion in Cologne Club Studio 672, with the compact co-owner Michael Mayer from 1998 to June 30, 2006 as a DJ together Tobias Thomas operational. The party series will now be held every month in Cologne sheet 2. Most releases still appear on vinyl, CDs often take a number of previously published Maxis together. The corporate identity of compact came from the Langzeitweggefährtin Bianca Bush, who now lives after several stays abroad in Hamburg and works.
