Konishiki Yasokichi I

Konishiki Yasokichi, Japanese小 锦 八十 吉, actually: Yasokichi Iwai (岩 井 八十 吉); (* October 15, 1866 in Chiba Prefecture, † October 22, 1914 ) was a Japanese sumo wrestler and the 17th yokozuna.

Konishikis training took place in the barn Takasago Beya. With 1, 68 m Konishiki was rather small for a Sumōkämpfer. Nevertheless, he wrestled in May 1888 in the Makuuchi division and has been nominated two years later for ozeki ( champion). Between 1888 and 1895 he won seven tournaments, and in 1896 he replaced the years cited by ligand alone the ranking Yokozuna Nishinoumi. Until his own resignation in 1901 he was able to emerge from any of the ten disputed tournaments as the winner.

The Ozeki who was successful under the same name a hundred years later, had his fight name in honor of the 17th Yokozuna.
