Konrad Freiherr von Wangenheim

Konrad Freiherr von Wangenheim ( born August 20, 1909 in Hannover, † February 1953 at Stalingrad ) was a German equestrian team eventing at the Summer Olympics in 1936.

Wangenheim was the son of the later Major Lutz von Wangenheim. After his secondary education, he struck the visiting officer's career in a cavalry regiment. He was one of the best riders in the Reichswehr.

When terrain ride of the 1936 Olympic Games, he fell with his horse elector on the fourth obstacle and broke his left collarbone. Despite the injury, he got back on his horse and finished the ride. Injured, with the arm in a sling, he started the following day in jumping, he was able to finish despite a renewed fall of horse and rider at the time, so he saved the gold medal for the German team.

This incident was in Leni Riefenstahl's film Olympia - processed feast of beauty as combative role model.

1944 became Lieutenant Colonel Wangenheim in Soviet captivity, where he was found hanged in February 1953. It is unclear whether he was murdered and committed suicide.

He was the father of the German - American fashion photographer Christopher " Chris " Wangenheim ( 1942-1981 ).
