Konstantin von Höfler

Karl Adolf Konstantin Knights of Höfler (also Karl Adolf Constantin Knights of Hoefler, born March 26, 1811 in Memmingen, † November 29, 1897 in Prague ) was a German historian.

Life

Konstantin Höfler studied law, philosophy and history at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich and Landshut. In 1831 he became a Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil. ) And conducted research in Göttingen, Florence and Rome. In 1836 he worked for the Munich newspaper and habilitated at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University, where he was appointed associate and in 1841 a full professor in 1839.

In addition to his teaching, he also dealt with political issues. He published in 1846 political writings during the riots. Because of his participation in the movement to the dancer Lola Montez, which exercised its baleful influence on King Ludwig I, and participation in protests over resolution of the clerical Parliament, he was released on 26 March 1847.

He took a job as an archivist in Bamberg. 1851 he was appointed to the Charles University in Prague, where he worked until 1881. In Prague, he stood in the nationalist struggle on the side of the German counter-movement. As a professor, he knew in his students no national differences, but at the same time was the greatest opponents of the doctrine of František Palacký. 1865 was chosen him for the Members of the Bohemian Assembly. Here he joined decided against state law claims of the Bohemian Crown, also against the self-determination of the Czechs and took the one-sided views of the feudal lords.

Since 1873, he headed the historical seminar, 1876-1880, together with Anton Gindely.

For his contributions to science, but also about the " German thing ", he was elected to the National Council, later councilor, was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, and was knighted.

Writings

His scientific merits as a historian are extensive. During his time in Germany he dealt with the history of the papacy and enthusiastic about often the romance of the Middle Ages and struggles between popes and emperors. He discovered some rare writings and commented on them. However, not all of his work won recognition, but attended by his scientific colleagues for intense discussions. Some works he published jointly with Pavel Jozef Šafárik.
