History

Qurba existed for the Punic period. The present name is derived from the Roman Qurba name Curubis.

Curubis was in the Roman province of Africa proconsularis, which also included parts of northern Algeria near the present-day Tunisia. The city was built in the year 46 BC by two generals of Pompey, Publius Varus Attius and Gaius Considius Longus, as a fortress. Caesar rose to municipium with the name Colonia Julia Curubis. 257 AD Cyprian of Carthage was interned there during the persecution of Christians under the emperor Valerian, later brought to Carthage, where he was executed. From ancient Curubis only a few cisterns and the remains of an aqueduct are preserved.
