Korla Awgust Kocor

Korla Awgust Kocor ( German name Karl August Katzer; born December 3, 1822 in mountains at Großpostwitz, † May 19 1904 in Kittlitz ) was a Sorbian composer, conductor, music critic and organizer of the Sorbian musical life.

Life

After completion of the primary school in Großpostwitz Kocor entered 1838 in the estates of the seminar in Bautzen, to receive training as a teacher. After finishing his studies he became a teacher in 1842 in Bardo. In the autumn of 1844, he met in Oppitz the first time on the Sorbian poet Handrij Zejler. Kocor began the tradition of the Sorbian song festivals; on October 17, 1845, he could do the first meeting of its kind in Bautzen. There also Zejlers Rjana Lužica was first performed, the setting of Kocor comes. The encounter with Handrij Zejler should prove in the future as artistically very productive - so Kocor created musical settings of many poems Zejlers that are very popular to this day. Kocor is primarily discussed as the creator of the great oratorios cycle " Počasy " ( The Seasons ) after four epic poems Zejlers in the history of music. 1852 joined Kocor the place of a teacher and organist in Kittlitz. This office he held until his retirement in 1888. From 1895 to 1897 worked Kocor as chairman of the music department of the Sorbian Academy of Sciences " Maćica Serbska " to which he was appointed an honorary member in 1895.
