Koru Flag

The Koruflagge is one of several proposals in the debate about a new flag for New Zealand.

Formation

The Wahlneuseeländer Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed Koruflagge 1983 as an alternative to the current flag of New Zealand, as this is only a reminder of British colonial rule for many New Zealanders.

Description

The flag has the ratio 1:2. Main motive of Koruflagge forms of Koru (or Korukouwhaiwhai ), a stylized shown to entrollender fronds. He starts out from a black flagpole shown on the left edge of the flag. Black is a traditional color of Māori. At the starting point of this fern frond occupies the entire width of the flagpole while he gets narrower toward the tip and is curled. The resulting background resulting white spiral represents Aotearoa, the Maori name for New Zealand, which translated means "land of the long white cloud".

Importance

The fern is entrollende and the stylized cloud based on Maori patterns and thus represent the culture of the natives. Friedensreich Hundertwasser also saw illustrated with nature in the design humanity in harmony.
