Kotonowaka Terumasa

Kotonowaka Terumasa (Japanese琴ノ若 晴 將; born May 15, 1968 in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture as Kamatani Mitsuya (镰 谷 満 也) is a former Japanese sumo wrestler.

Kotonowaka began his career in May 1984, initially he was still called Konno Mitsuya (今 野 満 也), from July Kotokonno Mitsuya (琴 今 野 満 也), from March 1988 Kotonowaka Mitsuya (琴の若 實哉) - with changing the spelling of his first name -, in September 1998 Kotonowaka Masakatsu (琴 乃 若 将 胜), and finally in July 1999 Kotonowaka Terumasa.

He rose in 1990 to juryo Division and belonged since 1991 to the continuously Makuuchi division. He could repeatedly break into the sanyaku ranks - his highest ever ranking was achieved in 1999 sekiwake - most of the time but belonged to his 15-year membership in the Makuuchi a permanent fixture of the maegashira ranks.

Kotonowaka was known for his heavily reliant on style counter techniques by which his fights often came relatively long. In this circumstance his nickname "Mr. Ippun " ( " Mr. One - Minute" ) alludes to.

Although Kotonowaka could never win a tournament, but at least he won eight times against Yokozuna and received in the course of his career five prizes for Fighting Spirit and two for the best performance in a tournament.

During the November 2005 tournament Kotonowaka, who was his class at that time by far the oldest fighter, announced his resignation. He immediately took over as equerry ( Oyakata ) as Sadogatake Mitsumune (佐渡ヶ嶽 満宗) the fortunes of his old wrestler Stalls Sadogatake - Beya. The prerequisites for this he had created by his marriage with the daughter of his predecessor, the 53rd Yokozuna Kotozakura.
