Kroonstad [ krʊənstad ] (Alternative name: Maokeng and Seeisoville ) is a town in the municipality Moqhaka, district Fezile Dabi, Free State Province in South Africa. She had 2011 97.780 inhabitants ( census ) and is 1,369 meters above sea level. Kroonstad is each 200 kilometers west of Johannesburg and north-east of Bloemfontein on the banks of the River Vaal.

Is named the city after a horse named Kroon ( German: " Crown"), which crashed in a nearby river and a leg broke. As a reminder of this horse of the river Kroonspruit ( " crown current") was called. At the foundation of the city, this name was taken. The community name Moqhaka is the Sesotho word for crown.

Kroonstad is an agricultural and administrative center with modern shops, theaters and Sarel Cilliers the museum.

History

The city was founded in 1855 by Voortrekkers. From March 14 to May 11, 1900 it was the capital of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein to Kroonstad replaced.
