Kubu Island

Kubu Iceland is a geological survey in the south west of Sowa Pan, which is one of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in northeastern Botswana. Contrary to the name ( Iceland ) it is not an island.

The name Kubu is the Setswana term for hippo.

The elevation is about one kilometer long and protrudes about 20 m from the pot flat Sowa Pan. Your rock is covered with guano.

Fauna and Flora

Kubu Iceland is visited, among others, jackals, hyena, springbok, impala and the occasional elephant. The vegetation consists mainly of baobab trees, African chestnuts, Sterkulien and Combretum.

Culture

Here are up to 1.25 m high stone walls that were probably created for unknown reasons in the 17th or 18th century. Who erected, is also not known.

The Botswana government has Kubu Iceland declared a National Monument, but it is accessible to tourists.
